Casino a ‘Concept’ To Ontario First Nation

Though a casino resort has been studied for several years, Saugeen First Nation Chief Randall Kahgee (l.) said the project, to be located near Sauble Beach in Ontario, Canada, still is a "concept." The property would include a casino, cultural center, bingo parlor, hotel, cabins and cottages, retail, restaurants, marina and more.

Saugeen First Nation Chief Randall Kahgee said it may take two or more years before the tribe decides to move forward on a proposed lakeside resort casino near Sauble Beach in Ontario, Canada. He said the “concept” is an “exciting opportunity” that’s “in the very initial planning states,” adding, “by no means are any plans finalized.”

Kahgee said several feasibility studies conducted in the past few years have indicated that a hotel or resort-type facility could be successful. The exact location would be determined by environmental priorities, he noted.

Proposed plans feature a 3,000 square foot casino and 2,000 square foot bingo parlor, 2,500 square foot golf clubhouse and 4,000 square foot cultural center, plus retail, space, a restaurant, a 60-room hotel, cabins and cottages, nature trails, marina, spa and pool. Condos and townhouses also are included in the plans. “The Village Saugeen will be the most significant economic development driver for the Saugeen First Nation community,” planning documents said, noting the project would offer community members jobs and would be an “everlasting legacy” for the Saugeen people.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation spokesman Tony Bitonti said since Saugeen First Nation is not within one of Ontario’s 29 designated gaming zones, its casino would require special permission from the province.
