Delta Corp of India opened its first Sikkim casino, Casino Deltin Denzong on January 14 with an invitation-only event including local dignitaries and government ministers along with special guest Tourism & Civil Aviation Minister of Sikkim, Ugen Gyatso. No formal announcement was made but the invitation was shared on a local social media site.
The casino, featuring 150 gaming positions, is located in the WelcomHeritage Denzong Regency, a luxury 5-star mountain retreat overlooking Sikkim’s capital, Gangtok, near Mount Kanchenjunga. Also in the region are the Casino Sikkim at Hotel Royal Plaza and Casino Mahjong at Mayfair Spa Resort.
Despite a strong anti-gaming political faction, Delta Corp, India’s largest and only publicly traded gaming company, posted record profits and expansion in 2016. It obtained a licensing deal for the Casino Deltin Denzong in July 2016. Its Delta Daman hotel-casino is expected to open soon in Goa, where Delta Corp operates land casinos and three offshore casinos, plus including the Deltin Caravela casino-hotel cruise ship, which the company secured a license for in June 2016.
