A group representing employees at several Macau casinos will vie for a seat in September’s elections to the territory’s Legislative Assembly.
Casino worker benefits and job opportunities will top its list of priorities, said the Macau Power of Gaming Association, which has gathered the signatures of some 400 registered voters, 100 more than the required minimum, endorsing its candidacy and has submitted them to the Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Commission.
Next year’s scheduled retendering of the territory’s six casino concessions is another area where the group will seek to exercise a voice, said the group’s candidate, Stephen Lau, who also serves as its chairman.
Elections to the assembly are conducted on a staggered basis and dominated by coalitions of business leaders and industries and NGOs representing a variety of influential community and neighborhood associations.
Gaming and junket operators are not allowed to participate, and the ban technically extends to staff, who are not permitted to store or display campaign materials on the job.
