Catawba Nation Awaits Decision

The South Carolina-based Catawba Indian Nation is waiting to hear if the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs will take into trust 16 acres in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The tribe, which filed its application in 2013, is in talks with Hard Rock International about a $600 million casino-hotel (l.) that would provide 5,000 jobs.

The South Carolina-based Catawba Indian Nation hopes 2016 will be the year in which it receives a positive answer to its application to have the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs take into trust 16 acres where the tribe hopes to build a 0 million casino off I-85 in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. In its 2013 application, the tribe proposed a 1.8 million square foot facility with a casino and hotel that would create 5,000-plus jobs.

The tribe is in talks with Hard Rock International in Orlando about managing the operation that would generate an estimated $300 million in its first year. Wallace Cheves of Sky Boat LLC, the tribe’s development partner, said in August that “multiple people worldwide” had contacted the company about branding the proposed Catawba casino.
