Catching Up in Ontario

Ontario has decided “better late than never” when it comes to online gambling, as they now offer games of chance for real money to players. Officials hope hundreds of millions of dollars will eventually funnel into the system through online gambling.

Like so many other regions in economic despair, Ontario, Canada decided one way to climb out of the hole was to expand gambling in the province. In their case, this meant legalizing online gambling. Ontario is actually one of the last provinces to offer the games, and was beat to the punch by British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces.

It is estimated nearly 500,000 gamblers in Ontario are spending money online elsewhere, and officials feel that by keeping them gambling in their own province, they could profit about $100 million annually after a few years. The new Ontario site even offers tutorials so people can learn how to play games such as slots, blackjack, baccarat, poker and roulette.

Critics have voiced the typical complaints, citing vulnerable people at risk, while encouraging youth and problem gambling.
