Century Casinos Will Buy, Rename Apex

Colorado Springs-based Century Casinos will purchase the Apex Casino (l.) in Edmonton, Alberta, for $12.3 million and its real estate assets for $9.3 million. The Apex, to be renamed the Century Casino, will be Century's third Canadian operation. The company will renovate the 34,500 square foot facility which offers 382 slot machines and 11table games.

Century Casinos Inc., based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, announced it will acquire the Apex Casino in Edmonton, Alberta for .3 million, and also will acquire the real estate assets of the Apex Casino at the appraised value of .3 million, following regulatory approval. The property will be renamed the Century Casino, said Managing Director of Century’s Alberta branch, Geoff Smith.

Purchase discussions began earlier this year, Smith said. He noted since the Apex opened in 1994, it has been well run and a solid market performer. Smith added the property is located in one of the five top areas to live in Canada and is situated next to the nearly completed Anthony Henday, the country’s first free-flowing orbital road.

The 34,500 square foot Apex was totally renovated in 2010 and offers 382 slot machines and 11table games. Amenities include a restaurant, bar, lounge with a live entertainment stage and a 175-person banquet facility, plus parking for 517 vehicles.

“We believe we’ll be able to get some good synergies of operations and marketing efforts between our two Edmonton-area locations,” Smith said. He noted Century Casinos plans to renovate the property. The current staff will be retained, he said.

Century Casinos, an international gaming conglomerate, owns casinos in Calgary and Edmonton in Canada, and also has holdings in Poland, the Caribbean and the U.S.
