Changes Upset UK EuroMillions Players

The cost of playing the EuroMillions lottery in the UK increased to $3.30, angering players who are venting their anger on social media. But EuroMillions operators said the enhancements will offer bigger prizes and guarantee two UK millionaires in every draw, double the current number guaranteed per year.

UK players of the EuroMillions lottery are taking to social media to blast recent changes to the game, including a price increase to .30 for them and up to .78 in the rest of Europe. Managed by 10 operators across the continent, officials said EuroMillions will offer bigger prizes and guarantees more millionaire winners.

Sally Cowdry, consumer and retail director at Camelot, one of the lottery operators, said, “EuroMillions has always captured the UK public’s imagination with its exhilarating jackpots and numerous multimillion-pound winners, boosting returns to good causes in the process. It’s now time to re-energize the game and take it to the next level and these fantastic enhancements will do just that, helping us to deliver even more for our players and UK good causes in the years to come.”

The enhancements include at least two guaranteed UK millionaires in every draw through the UK Millionaire Maker, which will double the current number of guaranteed UK millionaires per year, Cowdry said. She added the changes would lead to more frequent, larger jackpots, starting at the higher amount of $18.7 million, plus more than twice as many jackpots per year of more than $66.6 million.

Players still will pick five main numbers from one to 50 and two lucky stars, now from one to 12 instead of 11. The extra lucky star will lower the chance of winning the jackpot from the current one in 117 million to one in 140 million. However, Cowdry said the overall odds of winning any EuroMillions prize remained at 1 in 13.
