Cherokee Nation Studies New Oklahoma Casino

Moving forward on plans to build a new Cherokee Casino Tahlequah (l.) in Oklahoma, Cherokee Nation Businesses recently voted to spend $1.5 million on preliminary infrastructure and design studies. The current casino will be converted into a language immersion school for the tribe when the new venue is operational.

In a unanimous vote, the board of directors of Cherokee Nation Businesses recently approved spending .5 million on preliminary infrastructure and design studies for a new Cherokee Casino Tahlequah in Oklahoma. The venture will be part of the Cherokee Springs Plaza development along U.S. 62. The studies will take six months to complete.

When the new casino is operational, the current 20,000 square foot casino will be converted into the Cherokee Nation’s language immersion school. The casino, located near the tribe’s Tahlequah headquarters, offers 400 electronic gaming machines.

U.S. 62 will be widened to handle increased traffic flow along the south side of Tahlequah. CNB Executive Vice President Chuck Garrett said, “It’s a substantial investment, but we want to work to accommodate that additional traffic.”
