Chicago Gambling Market Worth $2.5 Billion

The Chicago-area gambling market, valued at $2.5 billion, would add $550 million to the Illinois gambling market under proposed legislation. The bill calls for opening casinos in downtown Chicago and surrounding areas. The measure also would allow slots at airports and let existing casinos add more games.

Supporters of proposed legislation to bring casinos to Chicago and the surrounding area said the local gambling market would be worth .5 billion and the Illinois gambling market would grow by 0 million. Slot machine revenue would increase by 20 percent and table games would be taxed by 16 percent. The measure also would allow the existing venues to offer more games and slots could be installed at airports.

The legislation states, “While authorization of casino gambling in Chicago will enhance investment, development and tourism in Illinois, it is recognized that it will do so successfully only if public confidence and trust in the credibility and integrity of the gambling operations and the regulatory process is maintained.”

The bill that includes Chicago-area casinos is part of a package deal that must be passed in its entirety or none will pass.

Legislators earlier rejected measures to legalize daily fantasy sports and online gaming.
