Chile’s Executive Branch is moving forward with regulating online gaming during March of this year, Undersecretary of Finance Claudia Sanhueza told the Economic Commission of the Chamber of Deputies last week.
Sanhueza told lawmakers that the government will use one of two models to regulate the sector: total prohibition or employing a state monopoly with a semi-open market.
If it chooses to legalize online gaming, the government will put the activity under the supervision of the Superintendency of Gaming Casinos (SCJ).
SJC Superintendent Vivien Villagrán attended the session with Sanhueza. She told legislators that regulating iGaming will be “an extremely costly battle” involving the Internal Revenue Service (SII) and Financial Market Commission (CMF).
The Chamber of Deputies has been holding hearings this month to hear stakeholders wanting to give feedback on the regulation of online gaming.
