China Could Jumpstart Suspended Lottery

A number of media outlets are reporting that the Chinese government plans to reintroduce online lottery sales after ordering them to shut down in early 2015. There has been no confirmation from Beijing, and no timeline for the reported trial of a new lottery system.

Several news outlets are reporting that the Chinese government is planning a trial run of an updated online lottery sale system. The Economic Observer cited an unnamed industry source who said sales will resume after the regulations are revamped.

Beijing ordered what it called a “temporary” shutdown of online lottery sales in March 2015 after government audits turned up “widespread evidence of fraud by officials at provincial lottery administration centers,” according to CalvinAyre.com. At the time, China’s Ministry of Finance noted “rampant irregularities” in the system and banned all online lottery sales from that point. As a result, lottery sales fell 3.8 percent in 2015.
