China Lottery Sales Soar

Epic Games, makers of the Fortnite video game, say they now show users the contents of paid loot boxes before they purchase them.

Loot boxes contain virtual items used in video games such as special weapons and character traits. Since the contents are usually hidden before purchase—and since players value some items over others—their sale has been called gambling as buyers are “betting” on receiving lucrative items. Many virtual items are also bought and sold online and even gambled.

The loot boxes have caused controversy with countries such as Belgium attempting to block their use saying many video gamers are underage and being introduced to gambling through their use.

Epic Games announced the change to gamers through its website.

“A big change is coming soon for Save the World V-Buck Llamas,” the company said in a press release referencing a version of the game. “Here’s the scoop. We believe it’s important that the Llamas you buy have what you want, and that you can earn awesome items just for logging in and playing. Previously known as V-Buck Llamas, X-Ray Llamas will now show you the contents before you purchase it. Not interested in what the Llama offers? Simply wait until the daily store refresh and there will be a new selection.”
