China Might Fast-Track High-Speed Vegas-LA Rail

Nevada-based China Railway International anticipates breaking ground on a proposed 230-mile high-speed rail line that would be called XpressWest.

China Railway officials hope to break ground on the estimated $100 million project in September 2016 that would connect Las Vegas and Los Angeles and give the state-owned company a foothold in the U.S. high-speed rail market and stay ahead of the Japanese.

The XpressWest project is the most recent to take shape that would connect Las Vegas and Southern California, boosting tourism in Las Vegas while reducing traffic between the two cities and being more environmentally friendly.

Various high-speed rail projects connecting Las Vegas and Los Angeles have been tried with no success, but the newest endeavor has the Chinese government’s backing and competition from Japanese firms.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has been visiting China to spur investment in the state, which might include an electric car factory in North Las Vegas.
