Chinese Police Raid Illegal Ring

Law enforcers in Heilongjiang Province, China raided the headquarters of an alleged international gambling ring involving a website in the Philippines that attracted bettors from the mainland. At the site, police seized more than 80 million yuan (US$12.9 million) in cash.

Website targeted 10 provinces

Chinese police have broken up a suspected international gambling that was attracting Mainland China bettors to a website in the Philippines, according to the China News Service. Police escorted the alleged ringleader, identified only as Wang, from the Philippines to China following a raid that included the seizure of more than 80 million yuan (US$12.9 million).

The police have arrested 125 other suspects in connection with the gambling website dafa888.com, which reportedly reached bettors in 10 provinces. They have frozen bank accounts containing 230 million yuan, the report said. Authorities also identified a number of gambling networks, online payment platforms and agencies in connection with the case.

Penalties for illegal gambling are punishable by up to three years in prison and fines. Operating an illegal casino can result in 10 years imprisonment and fines.
