Although Churchill Downs has not yet purchased the old U.S. Bank building in Louisville, the company recently submitted plans to invest $6.35 million to transform it into the proposed Derby City Gaming Downtown casino. According to documents filed with the Louisville Metro Planning and Design Services, that’s just the initial cost and only applies to the building’s exterior.
Inside, Churchill Downs officials said the venue initially will offer 500 historical horseracing machines, a “fresh-air” gaming area, three bars including a main-level sports bar, plus a premium bourbon library and a wine and charcuterie lounge. The facility also will offer an expanded outdoor patio area, a design feature highlighting the fabled Garland of Roses and a large outdoor video sign on the building’s corner. Altogether, the 19,000-square-foot project will include 2,844 square feet of new construction.
