Cigarette-Style Warnings on the Way?

The European Commission plans to urge EU Member States to require online gambling ads to carry warning labels about problem gambling. The EU executive also wants some forms of event sponsorship curtailed.

The European Commission is preparing a draft document urging Member States to demand that all online gambling advertisements display warning messages similar to those seen on cigarette packs.

The EU executive was expected to make the recommendation this week. While not legally binding, it is aimed at addressing problem gambling and other social concerns connected with the US$14.3 billion industry.

Online gambling companies will be encouraged to display warnings about the chances of winning and losing, information on the risk of developing a gambling addiction and information on how to seek help for compulsive gambling.

The commission will also be proposing a ban on sponsorship of events aimed at minors. A number of operators are already being scrutinized by governments in the wake of aggressive advertising during the World Cup.
