Cirque du Soleil Downsizes LV Staff

Cirque du Soleil is being forced to truncate its support staff of five shows that it runs in Las Vegas in partnership with MGM Resorts. Cirque is being caught in the backwash of a big belt-tightening operation by MGM.

Cirque du Soleil, which partners with MGM Resorts to present shows in Las Vegas, is mirroring the gaming giant’s corporate downsizing by shuffling its own staff and concentrating the backstage management of five productions into one department head—who will manage five shows.

The only show on the Strip that won’t be affected by this reorganization is “Mystere” at Treasure Island, which is not associated with MGM. It also won’t affect a show Cirque will be opening at the Luxor this spring.

That means that department heads and some longtime members of their staffs have been laid off. Several without notice. One was reportedly so unhappy that MGM security had to escort him off the property.

MGM insists that the quality of the shows will not be affected by these changes.

MGM spokesman Brian Ahern issued this statement last week: “MGM is working with Cirque du Soleil to reorganize backstage operations at Las Vegas shows to align with how Cirque du Soleil shows are structured throughout the world,” He added, “This is part of our long-standing work together to continually improve show operations and focus on creating unforgettable experiences for guests and audiences. All shows and performances will continue as usual.”
