Cirque du Soleil Has New Owners

Cirque du Soliel Entertainment Group has emerged from bankruptcy protection in Canada with a new owner and a new board member and co-chairman, former Las Vegas casino executive Jim Murren.

Daniel Lamarre will continue as president and chief executive officer and have a seat on the board.

Cirque has been an entertainment tour de force on the Las Vegas strip for decades with shows at the Mirage, Mandalay Bay and Treasure Island.

Cirque was badly wounded by the pandemic over the last eight months. The restructuring will allow it to successfully relaunch said the company in a release.

Murren was formerly chairman and chief executive officer of MGM Resorts International. Murren said in a statement: “As a company with global opportunities and the ability to grow quickly, it is critical to Cirque’s successful expansion—and to its customers and partners—that we continuously execute on the right strategies.” He gave solid support to Lamarre’s continued leadership of the company.

Lamarre commented, “Together, we have already begun laying the groundwork for the relaunch of Cirque du Soleil and are excited to enter the next chapter of Cirque’s history.”
