Clark County OKs Resort/Arena Zoning

Former hoops star Jackie Robinson is a little closer to realizing a longstanding goal: to bring a billion-dollar nongaming resort and arena to the Las Vegas Strip. Local lawmakers have OK’d a zoning change at the site of the former Wet ‘n Wild, next to SLS Las Vegas.

Resort could be under way by fall

Clark County, Nevada commissioners have approved a zoning change that opens the door for a possible $1.4 billion resort and arena project at the old Wet ‘n Wild site next to SLS Las Vegas, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Former NBA player Jackie Robinson’s proposed All Net Resort &Arena could break ground in October.

Robinson has worked since 2007 on the planned 22,000-seat, retractable-roof arena project and nongaming resort on the 27-acre Las Vegas Boulevard site. Robinson played basketball at UNLV and went on to play for the Seattle SuperSonics, the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons in the 1970s and 1980s.

Robinson said $300 million in equity has already been raised to get the project under way. The arena would host 50 to 60 events such as concerts, motor sports, fights and other entertainment, according to the plan.

Robinson said his arena will be successful despite alternate plans for arenas in Sin City. MGM is planning a new $375 million, 20,000-seat arena to open behind New York-New York in 2016.

MGM Resorts President Bill Hornbuckle said his company is “confident that our experience in operating resorts and entertainment venues both in the United States and around the globe, especially when teamed with the capabilities of our partner AEG, makes us the preeminent entertainment market leader.”

The Cordish Companies and Findlay Sports Entertainment also are vying to build a $300 million Major League Soccer stadium at Symphony Park near downtown Las Vegas.
