Colorado Hands $14 Million in Tax Credits to U.K. Sportsbook

Somewhere in the U.K., an unnamed sports betting company is all smiles. The Colorado Economic Development Commission awarded the unnamed company $14 million in job growth incentive tax credits, part of more than $19 million in credits dispersed.

Here’s why—known only as Project Forge, the applicant proposes to spend $40 million to construct 120,000 square feet of office space, according to The Denver Post. The company will create 807 net new jobs with an average annual salary of more than $97,000, 108 percent higher than the wage in the county of Denver.

Project Forge will need an array of high end staff including senior leadership, software developers, data engineers, product and customer service managers, fraud and risk supervisors, and traders.

Overall, the company employs over 6,000 including at its current headquarters in New Jersey. But Denver is being tabbed as the new headquarters, with Tucson and Nashville in the running.

“We are excited about the opportunity to work in Denver and Colorado. It seems to be a great fit for us,” an executive with Project Forge, told The Denver Post. The Colorado commission cited the firm as “a global leader in the online sports betting and gaming sector.”

“Project Forge’s expansion seeks to bring the company’s reputation and brand awareness to the U.S. as its newest growth frontier,” the EDC’s project summary said. “While the company has a presence in New Jersey, the project will serve as a formal stake in the ground, the main office for the U.S.”

EDC officials justified the secrecy so as to not jeopardize confidentiality. But the company has shaped the industry through technology for the past two decades.
