Colorado OTBs Seek Sports Betting Legalization

Off track Betting facilities in Colorado are hoping that the state will legalize sports wagering. They hope to be able to add this amenity at their facilities all over the state.

Colorado’s off track betting facilities, such as Big D’s Off-Track Betting in Garden City, hope that the recent lifting of the federal ban on sports betting will soon allow them to add making book on sports like football and baseball to the bets that they already take on horse and dog racing.

Big D’s like many similar operations in Colorado, leases space from a local night club, which operates at night, while the majority of Big D’s business is in the daytime, and especially heavy on weekends. That’s when lines form and seats at its tables fill up.

Arapahoe Park horse track, like other racetracks in the state, would also like to start offering sports betting in addition to the three months of live racing it offers.

Mile High Racing, which owns the horse track, is offering a “no comment” as to whether it is pushing for sports betting. One of the family members who owns Big D LLC, which rents from Mile High, told the Greeley Tribune, “What I know is they we’re approved for pari-mutuel wagering. If it was a pari-mutuel product we potentially could be offering, yes, but as far as Vegas-style sports wagering, I don’t know. What our hope is, that down the road, this will enhance the pari-mutuel products we can offer to our customers.”

Last year during the football season Mile High offered pari-mutuel fantasy sports.
