Colorado Racino Measure Makes November Ballot

A citizen petition to place on the November ballot an amendment to allow casino gambling at Arapahoe Park racetrack in Colorado has been approved by Secretary of State Scott Gessler (l.). The controversial measure has been promoted by Arapahoe Park owner, Rhode Island-based Twin River Casino.

Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler recently approved for the November ballot Amendment 68—a controversial ballot issue backed by Rhode Island-based Twin River Casino–that would legalize casino gambling at the Arapahoe Park racetrack in Aurora. Twin River owns Arapahoe Park.

Gessler said a random sample of the 136,800 signatures submitted indicated the measure was “sufficient” with 102,180 projected valid signatures. Citizen initiatives must have at least 86,105 qualified signatures to be included on the ballot.

Voters will be asked to authorize limited-stakes gaming at the horse racetrack in Arapahoe County and at future racetracks in Mesa and Pueblo counties. Under the amendment, 34 percent of the estimated annual revenues of $100,00 from the racino’s slots and table games would help fund K-12 education.
