Columbia’s Senate has begun reviewing a tax bill aimed at online gambling as part of the government’s plans to revamp the country’s public welfare and healthcare systems, CDC Gaming Reports wrote February 12.
This is a priority of President Gustavo Petro who took office last year.
The upper house was scheduled to begin debates on these matters February 16, led by Senator Antonio Correa.
The country amended the Gambling Act of 2001 in 2016 by including online gaming in a competitive market place open to domestic and foreign companies. It was the first South American country to do so.
The Senate is contemplating increasing the 15 percent GGR rate on licensed operators who keep a return-to-player (RTP) rate of 83 percent and 17 percent for those who have a RTP of more than 83 percent.
So far, no senator has submitted an outline of a new tax proposal.
