Connecticut Mayor Asks Clarification on Casino RFP

Marcia Leclerc (l.), mayor of East Hartford, Connecticut, wants some clarification before she submits an application to build the state’s third tribal casino. The MMCT, which represents he Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, has extended the deadline for submission to October 15.

The mayor of East Hartford, Connecticut, has asked that the MMCT, the joint development arm for the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes several questions asking clarification on the request for proposals that the tribes have released for siting a third, satellite casino.

Mayor Marcia Leclerc sent the questions through the real estate agent for the MMCT. Search Real Estate. She asked for clarification in light of the fact that the tribes recently extended the deadline for submitting applications to October 15.

The purpose of the $200 to $300 million casino is to blunt the effects of the $950 million casino that MGM Resorts is building about 18 miles across the border in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Among the questions are inquiries as to what supplemental materials will be required to be included, and what follow-up questions the MMCT might ask of interested host communities.

The mayor said she wanted the public to know that the city was still interested in making a proposal. “We want to be 100 percent sure what we submit meets the stated requirements,” she said. She said she wanted the whole process to out in the open as far as her city was concerned.

“We have been fully transparent from the beginning and want the public to know,” she wrote.

Among questions that Leclerc asked were whether the casino would contract with local police, and whether the proposals submitted would be released to the public. She also asked whether the proposed casino would have 50 gaming tables or 150, as there seems to be confusion as to how many are required.
