Connecticut Officials Warn Against Offshore Betting

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection recently issued a statement warning consumers to beware of offshore gambling sites.

Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli wrote, “Like anything, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. These illegal platforms will make promises of better odds, higher payouts and out-of-this-world sign-up bonuses allegedly endorsed by celebrity athletes just to entice consumers. And while their platforms might look legitimate, they are illegal and not subject to regulation and inspection by the state.”

Cafferelli noted that since offshore betting sites are unregulated, bettors have no protection. For example, he said, a bettor could win a wager on a longshot and never receive the large payout. The bettor would have no legal recourse to get the money.

In addition, Cafferelli said, “Consumers are putting their personal information and money at risk by using these platforms. If you choose to engage in gaming activities, do so responsibly and legally.”

Currently DraftKings and FanDuel are the only regulated, legal sportsbooks operating in Connecticut. The Connecticut Lottery Corporation has been seeking a sports betting partner since the departure of PlaySugarHouse, owned by Rush Street Interactive.

These three legal sportsbooks are required to follow strict laws and regulations regarding which bets are offered; ensuring all sportsbook wagers are placed within state borders; overseeing bettor deposits, withdrawals and payouts; and protecting players’ personal information.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong added, “There are only three legal, regulated gaming operators in Connecticut. Any other site soliciting bets is illegal and unregulated and your money and personal information may not be protected. If you play, play responsibly. Please report any illegal gambling to the Department of Consumer Protection.”
