Cosmopolitan Cabanas Catch Fire

Fake palm trees were set ablaze at the Cosmopolitan pool last week, which sent one guest to the hospital, while others faced minor injuries. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

When the Cosmopolitan claims they have the hottest pool parties on the Strip, this probably wasn’t what they meant. One of the biggest stories last week on the Strip involved a raging fire in the Cosmopolitan pool cabanas. The fire broke out at the Bamboo Pool at the West End Tower, and touched nearly half of the cabanas.

The “ignitable source” has still not been established, although Assistant Fire Chief Sandra Baker surmised it is more than likely from an accidental fire, possibly from an electrical issue. Still, several people who were near the fire have expressed concern over cigarette use in and around the Cosmopolitan’s pool.

Most people on hand commended both the fire department and hotel staff for how they handled the situation. “We were in the pool, saw flames and everyone scrambled. They staff was pretty calm and under control. There were people outside and in the stairwell telling us where to go,” said local Jill Alegre, who was near the fire.

Others said that the staff was helpful, calmly guiding guests and even offering cold water to them. Unfortunately, not everyone came away unharmed. One guest injured from the fire was taken to the hospital, and a second continued to be evaluated. Both had suffered smoke inhalation.

Erin and Joe Santos from New York were on the last day of their trip to Las Vegas, and were inside a cabana when the fire started. “We noticed the palm tree next to us was on fire and I noticed it because it smelled strange. I told our waitress and she didn’t realize how serious the situation was. The fire spread to our cabana and we all ran out. We left our phones and wallets in the safe in our cabana but they’re burnt up,” Erin Santos said.

The pool opened the next day, and Willie Nelson’s concert the following day on the third floor, went on as planned.
