Last week the Cosmopolitan casino resort in Las Vegas held a job fair in a plush penthouse suite with the express intent of luring military veterans and their spouses to apply for the 150 job openings the casino has.
The Cosmopolitan has so far held seven job recruiting events aimed at veterans.
Lori Calderon, Cosmopolitan’s director of talent acquisition, told the Las Vegas Sun:
“Military people are reliable and resilient. They don’t get upset or disturbed by change and you can count on them. They are used to going in and tackling challenges and accomplishing a mission.”
The casino resort’s work force of 5,000 includes 200 veterans or their spouses, she said. As much as the casino wants to hire veterans, it has to make accommodations because sometime veterans have a hard time explaining their skills to people who are not in the military. At the same time employers need help translating military resumes, and are often puzzled by the multiple military acronyms that populate such resumes.
Calderon said she expected that a good number of the veterans who attended the company’s job events would be hired.
She told the Sun: “There are individuals who will leave here today with interviews set up for this week and next week,” she said. “There are individuals who will end up with job offers next week and there are even some who will end up with job offers today. It depends on the role and the position but it will happen fairly quickly.”
