The Clark County Commission has approved a 62-acre parcel of land at Russell Road and Interstate 15 at the southwest end of the Las Vegas Strip for a new 65,000-seat home for the Raiders when they relocate from Oakland, Calif., for the start of the 2020 NFL season.
The expected approval, which was unanimous, clears the team to begin ground work at the site later this year prior to launching construction in the spring.
Plans for the $1.9 billion stadium include a dome and a retractable wall, giving fans a view of the large south Strip resorts. Financing includes a $750 million taxpayer obligation in the form of public bonds backed by an increase in the Clark County hotel and motel room tax.
The Raiders paid $75 million for the site back in May despite a significant shortage of parking, an issue that will have to be resolved under the terms of the team’s agreement with the county. The stadium is required to have 16,250 parking spots on-site, but the land as is can only accommodate around 2,400.
Stadium construction consultant Don Webb, a principal and co-founder of California-based Cordell Corp., and project principal John Wood of Mortenson Construction, based in Minneapolis, said the Raiders see parking as a critical piece of the team’s tailgating culture and resolving the shortage is viewed as a priority.
The vote approving the location gives the team a year to devise a solution.
“It will be solved,” Webb said.
