Court Challenge to Hire of Disgraced Ex-Treasurer

The Mashantucket tribal court will decide a challenge to a man hired by the Foxwoods Resort Casino who was once convicted of misusing $178,000 in casino funds when he was the casino’s treasurer. The woman who didn’t get the personnel job given to former treasurer Steven Thomas filed the lawsuit.

A disgraced former treasurer of the Foxwoods Resort Casino who was convicted of using 8,000 in casino funds for his own benefit and was banished from the tribe for a year, nevertheless was considered more qualified than another member of the Mashantucket tribe for a personnel job, and was hired in her stead.

The hiring of Steven Thomas for the personnel job instead of Charlene Jones prompted the former member of the tribal council to challenge the hire in the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Court.

The court will hear the case on December 18. Thomas was convicted in 2007, and although he did not get prison time, was forced to live off of the reservation for a year.

The tribe argues that he is the most qualified person for the job.
