On June 1, the government of Malaysia declared a new total lockdown due to an eruption of new Covid-19 infections. All but essential businesses and services were ordered to shut down, including the Resorts World Genting (RWG) casino complex outside Kuala Lumpur.
The edict from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will be in effect until June 14 at the earliest, though it may be extended, reported GGRAsia. The lockdown was mandated after the country saw more than 8,000 Covid-19 cases in a single day late in May.
RWG had already suspended casino operations, but said last Monday, “Following the government’s announcement on the nationwide total lockdown, RWG will be temporarily closed until further notice. Essential resort-based services such as security, bomba, utilities and clinics will remain operational.”
It’s the third shutdown for RWG since the start of the pandemic; it closed from mid-March until mid-June 2020, and again from January 22 until February 17, 2021.
