Cowlitz Tribe Offers Gaming Addiction Therapy

The ilani casino in Washington will fund three certified counselors to offer therapy to gambling addicts. The Cowlitz tribe is carrying out its promise made when it was building the casino that opened more than a year ago.

Washington’s Cowlitz Tribe, which operates the ilani casino is carrying out its promise to fund therapy for problem gamblers. It has hired three certified counselors, who will operate independently from the casino out of an office in Vancouver.

According to casino General Manager and President Kara Fox-LaRose, “The tribe has been involved in health and human services for many years.” She added, “In anticipation of the (casino) opening, the tribe made a formal commitment to the state of Washington by way of their compact to dedicate a portion of gaming revenue to programs and services in support of its dedication to fostering healthy communities. This is a new service available to those seeking assistance with compulsive gambling.”

Team members are trained to immediately refer guests if they inquire about the service.

Fox-LaRose said, “They’re able to provide treatment based on their assessment of an individual that may be seeking some guidance. They’re prepared to provide recommendations to them, as they would with many other types of addictions they’ve been dealing with.”
