Cryptocurrency Site JustBet Under Investigation in Australia

JustBet, an Australian-registered sports betting site, is under investigation by a Tasmanian MP. The site offers online betting in both cash and cryptocurrencies. Though the site lists an Australian island territory as an administrator, local reports found it actually operates out of Costa Rica and is not licensed in Australia.

Justbet, an Australian-registered sports betting site that accepts bets in cryptocurrencies has come under investigation by Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie.

Local reports found that while the site is registered in the Australian island territory of Christmas Island—which gives it a web address ending in .cx—the site can actually be traced to Costa Rica, which is a center for cryptocurrency gambling sites.

The site does not appear to be licensed by the Australian gambling commission of any of Australian state or territory and according to legal experts offers games and forms of online gambling prohibited in Australia, according to a report at yogonet.com.

The Christmas Island Domain Association says it cannot de-register the site without a request being made by authorities or a member of the public lodging a complaint.

Wilkie, however, wants quicker action.

“The site should be shut down immediately, and the Christmas Island Domain Administration should act straight away to remedy the situation,” he said earlier this week.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has also announced it has begun an investigation into the site.
