The 2020 Danish Gambling Report showed that online casino activity surpassed sports betting for the first time during the Covid-19 year.
According to Denmark regulator Anders Dorph, overall online casino revenues came to DKK2,453 million (US$393.7 million) for a market share of 27 percent. Sports betting had a 25 percent market share.
Lottery sales topped online gambling, amounting for more than 35 percent of the overall Danish gambling market in 2020, or DKK 3,205 million, according to SBC News.
The results speak to the impact of the pandemic, which closed land-based casinos and gaming halls and postponed all sporting events.
Overall, the gaming industry generated DKK9.2 billion, down more than DKK600 million compared with 2019. Figures showed a transition away from land-based casinos towards online gambling. In 2012, land-based gaming accounted for over 40 percent compared to online gambling, which accounted for 20 percent. By 2020, online amounted to 45 percent compared to 30 percent for land-based casinos.
