Danville, Virginia Approves Casino Ordinance

Taking care of a “housekeeping issue” in anticipation of the opening of Caesars Danville (l.), the city council in Danville, Virginia approved an ordinance allowing casino gambling within city limits and 24/7 alcohol sales.

Danville, Virginia Approves Casino Ordinance

In a 7-1 vote, the Danville, Virginia city council recently approved an ordinance that would revise the city code and allow casino gambling within the city limits.

The ordinance also would allow the sale of beer and wine between midnight on Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday at a licensed casino gaming establishment. Both conditions were necessary for the operation of the temporary and permanent Caesars Danville casino, opening in July and in 2024, respectively.

City Attorney Clarke Whitfield said, “We are eliminating the old code for the casino district. For all other restaurants, that is still the old rule.”

City Manager Ken Larking said approving the ordinance was a “housekeeping issue.” He said, “Gambling is not legal in the city of Danville, currently by city code, and if we’re going to have a casino that’s hoping to open in the next few months, then we need to get that corrected.”

City analysts said the permanent Caesars Danville casino resort will generate more than $39 million in revenue to the city.
