David v. Goliath

It’s a name game as novice gambler David Walker wins a seat in the world’s biggest land-based poker tournament. Walker is just one of several Davids to compete in the UK’s nationwide David v. Goliath hunt.

A UK competition called “David v. Goliath” involves putting ordinary people named David in extraordinary contests of skill and ability. As part of the program, newlywed David Walker has just been chosen to compete in the world’s largest land-based poker contest, reports the Huddersfield Examiner.

Walker could win £250,000 (US$389,000) as he plays under the aegis of Grosvenor Casino. He is now being trained at “Camp David” by three of Grosvenor’s top poker pros, Joe Beevers, Jeff Kimber and Ellie Biessek. The tournament will take place August 8-16.

Walker concedes he’s an amateur at the poker table. “I got married in April to Vicki and we went on honeymoon to Mexico, where they were playing Texas Hold ’em in the hotel. It was fun and I enjoyed having a go.

“When I found out that I’d won a place I was very surprised,” he added. “(But) I think I have what it takes to win Goliath. If I did win some prize money, I’d put a big chunk aside to go towards a mortgage. I’d definitely go on holiday though, no matter what—probably to Las Vegas.”
