According to the South Dakota legislature, sports betting became the law of the land on July 1. But that does not mean wagers will be accepted yet In Deadwood. Rules and regs still need to be completed, according to Newscenter 1.

“Sports wagering service providers can start submitting their applications to be licensed in South Dakota. And that’s the first step in getting sports wagering moving forward here in South Dakota,” said Deadwood Gaming Association Executive Director Mike Rodman, who expects a minimum of 10 sportsbooks in town.

One of the proposed rules requires bettors to be within a casino building, such as Deadwood Mountain Grand even if relying on a mobile phone.

“We were really excited about getting our sportsbook finished and finalized. We knew this summer was going to be a busy summer, we wanted a lot of our customers that are going to be coming through to see what we have as a finished product,” said Tyler Nold, casino manager,

Nold expects big things from sports betting in town. “We know that there will be a boost in alcohol sales, there’ll be a boost in play outside of the sportsbook at slot machines, table games,” said Nold.

An economic study predicted $6.2 million in direct betting each year. more than 150 jobs and an increase in overall revenues to $22 million.
