Dean Serpa, former deputy chief of staff to former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, has accepted the position of executive director for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC,) CDC Gaming Reports wrote March 21.
Commissioners said Serpa was attractive due to his “unparalleled operations experience” and management experience.
Beside Baker, Serpa also worked for former Gov. William Weld in the 1990s and was chief of staff for the Executive Office of Economic Development and director of the Massachusetts Office of Business Development.
The commission’s mission has expanded in recent months since the Bay State added sports betting online and at retail locations. It also oversees the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos and horse racing.
Former Executive Director Karen Wells left her job last July and it has been filled on an interim basis by General Counsel Todd Grossman.
