Denmark Blocks 82 Unlicensed Sites

Denmark’s gaming regulator Spillemyndigheden has blocked 82 unlicensed gaming sites and a court has brushed aside challenges to that action. It says the regulator can continue to block the sites, which is the largest number ever blocked by Spillemyndigheden.

The regulator has appeared in court eight times to defend its actions since the 2012 Gambling Act was updated to allow blocking of sites. A total of 227 sites have been blocked so far.

Spillemyndigheden closely monitors internet gaming sites, looking for illegal sites. Besides automated searches it also investigates complaints. When it determines a site is offering unlicensed gaming, it first issues a warning and then goes to court to seek an order to block the site.

A red flag is raised when a site’s features are offered in Danish, when it accepts Danish currency or cards that operate only in Denmark.

Spillemyndigheden Director Anders Dorph stated that one of its primary functions is to protect players from illegal gambling. He added, “At the same time, it is very important that we ensure that the operators who are licensed to offer gambling in Denmark can run their business under orderly conditions and therefore our work to block illegal websites is very important.”
