Denmark Kicks Off Problem Gambling Campaign

Danish gaming regulator Spillemyndigheden has launched a new campaign to boost awareness of the StopSpillet initiative, a problem gambling awareness campaign introduced earlier this year. A series of 30-second ads which will be broadcast across nationwide TV, social media and streaming services.

“The films depict three persons (a family consisting of father, a mother and a young football player) in everyday situations, which on the surface look quite ordinary,” explained Spillemyndigheden. “However, all three persons are hiding a secret. They are compulsive gamblers but keep it a secret for their family and friends.”

“The purpose of spending resources on a nationwide campaign is first and foremost to increase the Danes’ awareness about StopSpillet,” says Birgitte Sand, director of the Danish Gambling Authority.

“We want to make the Danes aware that there is an impartial, confidential and free helpline for players, relatives and professionals. It is crucial that all Danes know that help is available if you – or someone you know – have ended up in an unfortunate situation due to gambling.”

The StopSpillet helpline has received more 700 calls since January; the new campaign is designed to ensure that more compulsive gamblers know where to seek help, by phone or via an online counselor.

“Fortunately, many people are already calling and getting good help and advice,” said Linda Lomborg, who is responsible for the helpline, “but Danes need to know where to call, even if you do not need to call now and then.”
