Denmark Sees Gambling Revenue Growth in 2018

Denmark saw gross gaming revenue increase 5.7 percent in 2018 over 2017 for a total of $1.46 billion. The market saw increase in online gaming and sports betting, especially during the World Cup. Sports betting accounted for 26 percent of revenue.

Gross gaming revenue from sports betting amounted to DKK 2.53 billion in 2018, up from DKK 2.33 billion in 2017.

Online casino revenue also increased by 19.5 percent from DKK 1.81 billion DKK 2.16 billion, or about 22 percent of total revenue.

Lotteries, including charity lottery games, remain the highest source of gambling income in Denmark and represent 31 percent of the country’s market. Revenue for this sector amounted to DKK 2.30 billion last year, up 6.6 percent from DKK 3.11 billion in 2017.

Danish regulator Spillemyndigheden also reported a year-on-year decline in land-based casino revenue last year, with revenue dropping 5.8 percent from DKK 375 million to DKK 354 million. Gaming machine revenue was also down 5.4 percent % year-on-year to DKK1.41bn for the year.

The figures show that online gambling is now responsible for 54.5 percent of all gambling revenue in Denmark, compared to 51.5 percent in 2017.
