DraftKings Ends Oregon’s Daily Fantasy Sports

DraftKings has ended daily fantasy sports games in Oregon. Although not conceding that DFS is illegal, it wants to get on the good side of the Oregon Lottery, which is looking for an operator of its sports betting monopoly.

DraftKings Ends Oregon’s Daily Fantasy Sports

In order to win favor with the Oregon Lottery, DraftKings has ended its daily fantasy sports activities in the state. DraftKings is after much bigger fish: the state contract for sports betting monopoly.

Currently sports betting may only be placed through the lottery’s ScoreBoard app, which DraftKings would like to operate.

In an announcement to its DFS customers, DraftKings wrote: “As you might already be aware, DraftKings has been in discussions with the Oregon Lottery to potentially transition its Scoreboard app to the DraftKings platform.” It continues, “During these discussions, some questions have been raised about whether paid fantasy sports contests are permissible under Oregon law.”

While not agreeing with the Lottery, DraftKings is deferring to it to maintain an amiable relationship. It stopped DFS contests in the state on July 26.

Devoted DFS players fired nasty but ultimately impotent emails at DraftKings.

Interestingly enough, DraftKings’s major rival, FanDuel, is not giving up the fight. It will continue to offering daily fantasy sports contests, except that now it won’t have to fight DraftKings over turf.
