Netherlands Minister for Legal Protection Franciscus Max Weerwind opposes state-mandated loss limits for gaming. He argues that they encourage players to bet with multiple operators, and, in some cases, with illegal ones.
Fellow Dutch regulator René Jansen has urged the government to set what he calls “responsible limits” for gaming losses. He has hinted that KSA, the nation’s regulatory agency, might impose such limits. In May Jensen declared during a speech, “In Sweden, the operator has a statutory duty to initiate an investigation if a gambler exceeds the deposit limit of €930.” He added, “These examples serve to illustrate that other avenues are open to the legislator.”
Existing regulations require players to set personal limits when they create accounts. Weerwind said he prefers a voluntary approach rather than a government mandate.
He commented, “When drafting the law, it was decided to let the player set his own limits. This choice is based on experiences from addiction care and various studies that show that the possibility for players to make well-informed choices about their gaming behavior is an effective prevention method. I therefore want to stick to this principle of self-limitation.”
