Eastern Band To Purchase North Carolina Property

In North Carolina, the tribal council of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the purchase of a 4-acre tract in the Painttown Community for $3.4 million. The property, owned by tribal member Davy Arch, is directly adjacent to the tribe’s Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee.

The tribal council’s resolution designates Principal Chief Richard G. Sneed to enter into a contract for sale and purchase of Painttown Community Parcel No. 834. Speaking for the Lands Acquisition Committee, which approved the purchase from Arch on August 10, Jay Gallinger said, “This was passed from Lands Acquisition because the tribe knows the necessity of buying this parcel. It goes back to the original purchase of the casino property. It’s an essential purchase that’s been put off for a long time.”

Sneed noted the property extends through the El Camino Hotel area. “This acreage was originally in a long-term lease. It was a 20-year lease. That lease ended at least a year and a half or two years ago. We’ve been doing an annual recurring lease on it,” he said.
