Eight Arrested in Homicide, Casino Robbery in Macau

The unrelated crimes both occurred in or near the Four Seasons casino hotel on Cotai. A mainland Chinese man was stabbed to death in a reputed clash between mainland gangs. A week later, four mainland residents were apprehended as suspects in an armed heist of HK$3.1 million from a baccarat table.

Eight people were arrested earlier this month in connection with a casino robbery at Macau’s Four Seasons Hotel and an unrelated homicide that occurred near the same Cotai Strip resort.

The homicide investigation has resulted in the arrest of four mainland Chinese men by Chinese police on suspicion of being involved in the May 18 stabbing death of a 40-year-old man and the wounding of three others near the pedestrian flyover at the Four Seasons.

Chan Chong In, head of the Gaming-Related Crimes Division of the Macau Judiciary Police, said the attacks resulted from a dispute between rival gangs engaged in prostitution, according to reports in the Macau and Hong Kong press.

The suspects in the casino robbery, three men and a woman, all from mainland China, were taken into custody less than 24 hours after attacking a Four Seasons croupier and a security guard with pepper spray around 5:30 a.m. on May 24 and making off in two taxis with a reported HK$3.1 million (US$395,000) in gaming chips and cash.

Two of the men were arrested by Zhuhai police as they fled the city via the Gongbei border crossing. Information from authorities there led to the arrest shortly after of the third man and the woman, who were taken into custody by Macau police in a casino hotel in Taipa, where all of the chips and cash were recovered, Chan said.
