Environmental Ruling Greases Skids for Tiverton Casino

Rhode Island’s environmental agency has given the green light to the Twin River’s Tiverton casino resort in Tiverton. The casino is planned for a few hundred feet from the Massachusetts border.

A ruling by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management that the plans by Twin River to build a casino and hotel on 45 acres in Tiverton would pose an “insignificant alteration” to the wetlands on the land would appear to release the casino to begin getting the permits it needs to open by its target date of July 2018.

The wetlands in question includes a swamp, a seasonal stream and “Sucker Brook” which connects two ponds in the area.

DEM attached 14 conditions that must be met before permits can be issued, such as taking steps to control erosion and runoff.

The town’s planning board says it will do what it can to make that happen.

Besides an 80,000-square foot casino, Twin River plans an 18,000 SF hotel and parking for 1,800 cars.
