The group hoping to win a casino bid in the Catskills at the shuttered Nevele Resort in Ulster County has recently proposed to the Cuomo administration a new plan for a casino resort.
Their hope is to build a $100 million dollar resort about 70 miles north of New York City featuring 750 video lottery terminals, and would include a “Sportsplex” featuring four baseball fields, eight fields for soccer, field hockey and lacrosse, and an indoor aquatics center. The Cuomo administration has yet to comment on the manner.
After the community in Westbury gathered to protest a proposed casino in their backyard, a lawmaker has raised the stakes, by the proposal of a bill which would kill any hope of a gaming facility in both Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick recently told WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall, “Because there is no community that is going to welcome one of these. Two of the largest towns on Long Island, Brookhaven and Hempstead, have said we don’t want it here, and I don’t think any other town would pass a resolution saying we’d be happy to have it here.”
Fitzpatrick said he would rather see the building of a housing unit or manufacturing facility as opposed to a casino on Long Island.
