EU: No Shared Gaming Regs

The European Commission says it does not see a need for gaming regulations that apply to all members of the European Union, nor will it launch an across-the-board awareness program.

European Commissioner El?bieta Bie?kowska says the commission does not support a common legal framework for all member states who offer legal gaming. According to PokerNews.com, Bie?kowska said the commission “does not consider to propose sector-specific EU legislation on gambling services nor is it planning a specific awareness campaign regarding gambling.”

In a May 13 statement, Bie?kowska wrote, “In the absence of harmonization at EU level, it is the responsibility and competence of national authorities to establish rules” related to betting shops and online services.

Though the commission will not create or enforce problem-gaming initiatives, she added, a resolution adopted in July 2014 “sets out a number of principles member states are recommended to adopt with the aim of protecting consumers and players as well as preventing minors from gambling.”
