Ex-Legislator Wants Public Hearing to Save Casino License

Andy Sanborn, former State Senator, and owner of the Concord Casino, has requested a public hearing to challenge the state’s determination that he is unsuitable for charitable gaming due to the fraudulent use of Covid-19 relief funds.

The New Hampshire Lottery Commission (NHLC) and the state’s Attorney General conducted an extensive investigation into Sanborn’s use of funds and casino operations from January to August. Their findings revealed that Sanborn fraudulently obtained $844,000 in Covid relief funds, which casinos are ineligible to receive. These funds were used to support his lavish lifestyle, including cash payments disguised as rent and the purchase of luxury cars for himself and his wife, State Rep. Laurie Sanborn.

Amidst the allegations, Sanborn maintains his innocence. He firmly believes that he has not committed any wrongdoing and is determined to defend both the casino’s license and his operator license. Sanborn has requested a public hearing before the NHLC to present his case and challenge the state’s determination. It remains to be seen how he will navigate this legal battle and whether he can prove his innocence.

The NHLC, in response to the investigation findings, issued a notice of administrative action to revoke Concord Casino’s charitable gaming license. This action was taken due to suitability and compliance concerns. However, despite the revocation notice, the casino has continued to operate as usual.

The NHLC, consisting of three members, holds the authority to make decisions regarding charitable gaming licenses. In this case, they will preside over the public hearing and carefully evaluate the evidence presented by Sanborn. The commission’s decision, along with the input from the state’s Attorney General, will ultimately determine whether the casino retains its charitable gaming licenses.

Sanborn’s wife, Laurie Sanborn, has also been affected by these allegations. Following the announcement of the revocation notice, Sanborn resigned from her position as the chair of the committee responsible for examining the state’s charitable gaming laws and assessing the benefits to charities. This move highlights the seriousness of the corruption allegations against the Sanborn couple and the potential consequences they may face.
