FanDuel launched an experiment during the first weekend of the NFL playoffs by offering the cryptocurrency Bitcoin as a prize in two daily fantasy sports tournaments.
FanDuel offered one Bitcoin to the winner of its free NFL Wild-Card weekend tournament and two Bitcoins to the winner of its $3 tournament.
“When your team makes the playoffs, the sky’s the limit. And from what we’ve read online, Bitcoin investors know exactly how that feels,” FanDuel said in a press statement. “So, for Week 1 of the playoffs, we’re giving you two chances to hop on the ultimate bandwagon and play to win some bitcoins of your own.”
A Bitcoin was valued at $14,825 when the tournaments were announced, but its price fluctuates on a daily basis.
In another fantasy sports story, Yahoo has announced it will no longer offer fantasy golf in 2018, but gave no reason for stopping the game.
“We will not be offering Fantasy Golf in 2018,” a post on Yahoo’s fantasy golf page reads. “We thank you very much for playing our game over the years and hope you will continue to play our other fantasy games.”
According to some reports, less than 50,000 players signed up for fantasy golf at Yahoo for 2017, leading to speculation that the lack of interest led to the company pulling the game. The company has actually announced it would pull the game in 2016, but then did offer the game in 2017.
