Fantasy Sports Industry Watching Online Gambling Ban Bill

The Fantasy Sports Trade Association has hired lobbyists to watch the progression of a proposed ban on online gambling to ensure it does not affect fantasy sports play on the internet.

The fantasy sports industry is keeping an eye on a proposed online gambling bill.

While remaining neutral on the bill, federal lobbying disclosures show that the Fantasy Sports Trade Association has hired law firm Dentons for help on “issues that may affect the fantasy sports industry and legislation related to gaming.”

The group is focusing on a bill from Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) that would ban online gambling in the U.S. The bill, at this point, does not apply to fantasy sports on the internet.

Fantasy sports has long sought to distance itself from online gambling.

“Fantasy sports leagues are games of skill. Managers must take into account a myriad of statistics, facts and game theory in order to be competitive,” the organization says on its website.
